About Teak – tectona grandis

The properties making teak ideal for use on boats have been known for centuries.  In short, teak requires little to no maintenance and lasts for years.

Thanks to its naturally high oil content it is resilient to water absorption and rotting.  If left untreated it mellows to a graceful silver patina which remains smooth if cleaned correctly.  Ironically many of the harsh products marketed as teak cleaners will actually speed up the deterioration of teak making it feel rough.

When dried correctly the expansion and contraction of teak in the elements is minimal.  Compared to other timbers it is very stable.  Used on the decks of boats, teak provides excellent insulation against heat and cold, and is safe and comfortable underfoot.

True North Furniture use teak harvested from plantations on the island of Java in Indonesia.  We visit our suppliers on a regular basis and select each plank individually ensuring we have the best cuts for marine application.
